The Perfect Morning Grooming Routine - Men's Grooming Guide

You work hard, and you play hard. You need to maximize your time. That means spending less time on tedious tasks and more time being productive. As a result, you’ve probably wondered how to establish a good morning routine.

I believe that a great men’s grooming routine is the best way to start any day. That’s why I’ve compiled this list of grooming tips for men. It will help you to form a killer morning routine so that you can start your day ahead of the pack.

Check out the tips below. Which of these will fit into your routine? Adopt those habits first. Remember that the first step to being a well-groomed guy on the fly is to make grooming as easy as possible for you. It could be an easy as always having a small toiletry bag for carry on luggage packed and ready for all your travel needs, making packing for travel effortless.

Having a super-complicated ritual is fine for those mornings when you’ve got nothing better to do. But, honestly, how many of those mornings do you have? Wouldn’t you rather get some extra sleep, or fit in something more productive?

Over the years, I’ve found that the best routines are simple and easy to replicate. The easier you make this for yourself, the easier it will be to repeat it. With consistent repetition, it will soon become a habit. Once that happens, you score big time. When proper grooming becomes a habit, you always look put together and in control. Keep your toothbrush and toothpaste in an easy-to-reach spot with a toothbrush and toothpaste holder, whether it's at your sink or in your shower. This will let you shave minutes off your morning routine. From there, it’s a few simple steps from the bedroom to the boardroom, and vice versa.

Are you ready to learn how to save yourself a ton of time and still look great? Then let’s dive right in.

What's Your Morning Routine?

Before we get started on our top male grooming tips, here are some things to consider.

· To establish a good morning routine, ask yourself a few questions, like: What does a good morning look like to you? Do you want to sleep later, fit in more exercise, read a book, and so on?

· When figuring out how long your morning routine should be, you need to consider how much time you have. I’m not talking about the, “Oh darn, I didn’t hear the alarm go off, and I’m late,” mornings. I mean a typical day for you.

· People are always asking me how long it should take to get ready in the morning. This depends on how to put together you need to look. Preparing for a shareholder meeting in the boardroom, for example, means spending more time than it would if you’re heading out with buddies to go fishing.

· And the big question: How should you start your morning? Well, my simple answer is a question back at you: What’s the number one thing that gets you motivated first thing in the morning?

I’d suggest keeping it as simple as possible. Grooming for men doesn’t have to be overly complicated. As most savvy grooming men will tell you, less is more when you want a streamlined routine that you can stick to.

A simple routine is something along these lines:

· Shower

· Shave

· Brush your teeth

· And remember: Grooming for men should always end with skincare

That’s it; you’re done. For the rest of this post, we’ll focus on how to make things go a lot faster. If you want more detailed men's grooming tips, check out our “Top Grooming Tips For Men” post.

Shaving Routine: How To Shave

I’m not a huge fan of shaving. At the same time, I can’t really rock the whole mountain man look either, so I don’t have much choice. In this section, we’ll go through ways to make your shaving routine a lot simpler.

If you’re wondering whether it’s better to shave at night or in the morning, I’d have to go with the morning. A romantic partner might find a little stubble sexy, but most bosses aren’t impressed by it. Stick to shaving in the morning and look sharp for work each day.

And when folks ask me how I go about shortening my morning routine, my short (see what I did there?) answer is multi-tasking. Yup—by far, the best way to streamline your morning routine. Hit the shower with your razer mug holder in hand. Better still, install a razor and toothbrush holder combo in your shower so that your razor and toothbrush is within easy reach. Shave minutes off your morning routine with this hack and have all your grooming done in the shower.

Why the shower? Well, if you were wondering how to streamline your morning routine, the shower is a great place to start. Shaving in the shower saves you having to clean up the sink. It also helps you get a better shave. You can either install a shower razor holder or stick with your standard razer cup holder. The steam from the shower opens the pores and softens the skin, giving you a smoother shave. Win-win!

By using smart tricks in the shower, you won’t have to wonder how men stay well groomed anymore...because you’ll be one of those well-groomed men.

Shorten Your Routine With A Fog Free Shaving Mirror

Naturally, if you’re shaving in the shower, you need to see what’s going on. That’s why you’ll need a fogless shower mirror. The Oliver, our shower mirror, combines practicality with a cool design. It’s not only a shatterproof mirror but also a fog free shower mirror. Best of all, you can get the plain shower shaving mirror by itself or add on the matching toiletries organizer. It’s convenience on the go in a few simple steps. Want more options for your fog-free mirror? Then check out our post, “What’s the Best Shower Mirror for Shaving?

Brush Your Teeth In The Shower

Our next top tip for saving time in the morning is to brush your teeth while you shower. Again, the payoff is in the fact that you don’t have to worry about messy cleanups. You can save time by brushing your teeth while rinsing yourself off.

All you need to do is to install a toothbrush holder in the shower. Alternatively, consider getting a waterproof Dopp kit and use it to carry your toothbrush and toothpaste with you. I’d recommend installing toothbrush holders because it’s easier.

A good option for both toothbrush and toothpaste holder is the set I was talking about in the previous section. The Harvey & Oliver Set comes with an anti-fog mirror, toothbrush holders, a bar soap holder, and a useful shower caddy container. You might wonder whether it would be better to use a covered toothbrush holder. Surprisingly the answer is, “No.” While those holders prevent dirt accumulating on the brush, they also make for a perfect environment for bacteria to breed.

Get Organized For Faster Mornings

One of my top tips is that you need to have an excellent organization. If you have all your daily use items on hand, you don’t have to waste time looking for them every day. It doesn’t take long to get into the habit of putting everything neatly back in place. And you’ll be amazed at how much time it saves you. If you have a small bathroom, make sure you check out our post on small bathroom storage ideas.

Use A Soap Holder

Yes, a soap bar is a better choice environmentally. They last longer than body wash, use less plastic packaging, and usually don’t contain plastic bits to help scrub off dirt. What I don’t like about using bar soap is that if you don’t have a good bar soap holder, the bar gets goopy and slimy.

Fortunately, if you use a decent shower soap holder, you won’t have to worry about this. A good quality soap dish or soap caddy will have drainage holes that allow the soap to drain well. If the soap caddies perform their job properly, your shower soap dish will let all the water drain. Your soap won’t necessarily be completely dry to the touch, but a good soap dish for a shower will keep it from being slimy.

If you really don’t like the idea of a bar of soap, why not look into a shower soap dispenser? A wall mount soap dispenser can speed up your routine. I know in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t take long to open a bottle of body wash, but in the morning, every second count.

With a dispenser, you can easily release the perfect amount every time and cut down on waste. It’s also a time saver not having to worry about fiddling with the caps. And everything is within reach—no bottles to drop or tip over. If the dispenser option doesn’t quite do it for you, check out The Benjamin, our cool silicone soap holder instead.

Shower Holder For Shampoo

A shampoo dispenser can help to cut the clutter in the shower. It also makes getting the perfect quantity of shampoo much simpler. Find a matching shampoo and conditioner dispenser to make your life even easier.

These dispensers don’t take up that much space, and they blend in quite well. A shower dispenser can also add a stylish touch to your bathroom.

They’re not for everyone, though. They do involve a little more effort than a plain shampoo bottle because you’ll have to refill it once in a while.

A shower holder for shampoo could work out to be the easier option. A big advantage of the shower shampoo holder caddies is that they won’t take up much space at all. Make things easier for yourself by choosing a shampoo bottle pump rather than a screw cap.

Try A Toiletries Organizer

Organizing toiletries can be something of a nightmare. There’s only so much space on your bathroom counter. Drawers are useful, but they do keep the items that you need out of sight. Besides, there’s bound to come a time when the drawers don’t offer enough toiletries storage space. That’s when a toiletries caddy can become exceptionally useful. There are several different options on the market today. You’ll find everything from your standard shower caddy to a more comprehensive bathroom toiletries holder and organization system. An over the door shower caddy can be useful in a smaller bathroom. Or, if you have a tub and want to save space, a bath caddy could be worth looking into. It stretches across the bath and so takes up no space in the actual room itself. So, I guess what I’m trying to say here is that you have options when it comes to choosing a toiletries organizer. Grooming On The Go

If you’re staying over at someone’s place, out on a work trip, or getting away for a weekend, there’s no reason to let your grooming slide. (Okay—when you’re on vacation, you’re allowed to go a bit Neanderthal. I’ll give you a pass on the shaving.)

You’ll still need to stay fresh, though, and that’s why you’ll need a handy Dopp kit. It’s essentially just a toiletry bag for men, but doesn’t Dopp kit sound so much better? The Koby Bag is a cool example – it’s made out of silicone and so is an entirely waterproof toiletries bag. The key to using your toiletry travel bags correctly is all in how you pack them. Check out our “The Right Way To Pack A Dopp Kit” post for full details.

Mainly, though, the name toiletry bag tells you precisely what you’ll pack. It’s not rocket science – you’ll use it to carry your essential men’s toiletries. And I stress “essential.” You want your men's toiletry bag to be as light as possible.

I’d personally avoid packing anything that I could get at my destination. Things like body wash, for example, are something that you’ll find in most hotels' shower toiletries holder. Where I would be picky, though, is with my shampoo and conditioner. You can never quite tell what the hotel’s brand will be like, so I always pack my own. Also pack things that you might need to freshen up during a long flight or layover, like deodorant and dry shampoo.

Make Changes To Your Morning Routine

Streamlining your morning routine when you approach the matter sensibly is relatively easy. It’s all about making the right choices. Simple changes, like finding the right fogless mirror, don’t seem important but can make the difference between being on time and being late. Try out these hacks for the best morning routine and you'll be on your way to success in no time.
